When the owners purchased this 2.5-acre property overlooking Mecox Bay their dream was to convert the existing traditional design vernacular of the home and landscape into a modern, seaside retreat suited to accommodate the active lifestyle of their growing family.  Much of the existing landscape was overgrown and in need of a new identity congruent with the house renovation.

The site design includes a combination of intimate and social spaces such as a dining terrace with a renovated Zen-inspired water feature, tennis court with viewing terrace that includes playful art sculpture and seating, and a meditation garden for quiet self-reflection.  In support of the design team’s goal to blur the lines between interior and exterior spaces, we elevated the pool terrace to meet the home’s finished floor elevation, thereby creating an extension of the living room out into the landscape; the double negative edge pool design adds an additional visual link to the bay beyond.

Existing trees and shrubs were transplanted to expose water views and accentuate the newly designed spaces.  A slight manipulation of the entry driveway’s grade complemented by an allée of fastigiate hornbeams allows for the home to be slowly revealed, leading to an “aha” moment as views open to the bay beyond.  The vehicular circulation, walking paths, and gardens were designed to support healthy connections and a lifestyle linked to the beauty of the site’s surroundings.
